Ghost Fishing and the Oiligarchy

I like to listen to interesting and informative podcasts while working sometimes.  Recently, I listened to the Stuff You Should Know podcast on Ghost Fishing (http://www.stuffyoushouldknow.com/podcasts/ghost-fishing.htm) and found myself, yet again, repulsed by the ego of humankind.

Ghost fishing is what happens when the things humans use to fish with are left in the waters and fish, birds and mammals are caught by it.  Considering the slow, tragic deaths these innocents endure through the unconscious choices we humans have made, this is just another notch in the list of horrors we are inflicting upon the voiceless.

A point that Josh and Chuck brought up in the podcast is how our fishing nets used to be made of biodegradable materials, but now they are made of nylon.  I’m sure that the nylon nets are purported to be cheaper in the long run because they last longer and are potentially stronger than biodegradable materials would be.  My question is at what cost?  Where my head really went to was how the Oiligarchy strikes again.  No, that’s not a mistake in spelling…. OILigarchy.

If you haven’t yet done any research on the Oiligarchy, let me direct you to James Corbett and his YouTube video ‘How Big Oil Conquered the World.’  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySnk-f2ThpE  Sure does connect a lot of the dots regarding our healthcare system, our school system, our lack of more clean and efficient energy technologies and our dependence upon oil and how it’s found in so many different products it’s difficult to truly wrap one’s head around.

This YouTube video also connects the dots regarding many of the senseless wars we are constantly perpetrating. Did you know that America has been at war 93% of the time – 222 out of 239 years, since 1776: (http://www.globalresearch.ca/america-has-been-at-war-93-of-the-time-222-out-of-239-years-since-1776/5565946 And it sure doesn’t look like it’s getting any better.

I weep at the knowledge of so many lives lost, so many veterans damaged physically and/or emotionally.  I weep at the knowledge of so many lives in our oceans, lakes, rivers and beaches lost or damaged physically and/or emotionally.

I pray that we as humans continue to awaken to the fact that we have been sold a bill of goods regarding our lifestyle and what we truly need and truly know.  If we keep asking ourselves why our technology has changed exponentially in the past few years and yet we are still running combustion engines in our vehicles, we begin to see more deeply into the reality of who is really in control of teaching us about what we ‘need.’

If we keep learning about things such as ghost fishing and stop and really consider that entangled mess of fishing line we came across in the rocks of a mountain lake, we can stop and connect the dots that show the picture of the choices we are making.  We can pause and consider how our choices can continue to empower the Oiligarchy or can be more sustainable and LIFE supporting.  It just takes one small choice at a time.
